The previously mentioned hard drive had some data on it. It took a bit of sleuthing, but I managed to locate an email address among all the data, and gave it a shot. (I did what the police should have done, but they obviously don't have the time)
Sure enough, the person responding to the email did indeed lose the hard drive during a break-in at their house. This person lives quite close to me, and it turns out that I have multiple items of theirs.
So, we've just now linked a break+enter back to my thief. At this point I haven't heard the whole story about that break-in, but it might be possible to get some extra charges filed against this bastard.
I'll be meeting up with this person in a day or two; I'll post any more juicy details then.
Meanwhile, I have encoded all of the bootlegs! I just need to rip them into individual mp3s...

after 1.5 years of battling with the police department and getting the run around and ignored, i finally had all of the confiscated items released to me.
Here's a picture (big!) of the stuff I have.
Jari's tapes are there, among a weird array of miscellaneous shit that my neighbors had that this guy had stolen.
I got 5 tapes and 7 shells. So the thief likely listened to a couple of the tapes and either threw them out, or the police were sloppy when they picked up the goods.
I have no idea what I'm going to do with the other stuff. It's all mostly junk, a lot of USB cables and a purse that had some office supplies in it. I also have a CD rom drive for a Dell laptop computer and an external maxtor hard drive (100g) I will be powering that up soon to see if there is any information on it as to who the owner may be.
Anyway, now that I've gotten the tapes back, I can finally encode them and upload them for all to share. yay! I'm so glad this chapter of my life is over...
